Nigeria is solidifying its position on the global stage, with 2025 marking a pivotal year in its journey toward becoming an artificial intelligence (AI) powerhouse. The second edition of InnovateAILagos, scheduled for February 21 at the Landmark Event Centre, underscores the nation’s commitment to scaling AI adoption and fostering inclusive growth. Organized by AI in Nigeria, a collective of visionary leaders and tech enthusiasts, the event will delve into cross-sectoral innovations aimed at addressing key socio-economic challenges.

Dotun Adeoye, Co-convener of InnovateAI Lagos, emphasized the conference’s role in catalyzing progress: “InnovateAI Lagos 2024 was a stepping stone. For 2025, we are taking it further—examining how AI can drive inclusive growth, solve economic challenges, and catalyse innovation across Nigeria.” The inaugural event, which drew over 4,000 attendees, showcased the potential of AI to inspire policies, influence businesses, and ignite collaborations. Building on this momentum, the 2025 conference will spotlight AI’s potential to tackle unemployment, infrastructure gaps, and financial inclusion, fostering sustainable development across sectors.

Nigeria’s Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, has painted an optimistic picture of the nation’s AI trajectory. Speaking during a television interview, Dr. Tijani noted, “In 2024, the government funded 45 AI startups, trained civil servants, and supported innovative applications in agriculture, healthcare, and education. These efforts have positioned Nigeria among the top 60 AI nations globally.”

Dr. Tijani attributed this progress to initiatives such as the 3M TT programme, which has trained 150,000 Nigerians in critical digital skills since its 2023 launch, with the ambitious goal of reaching three million participants. By equipping citizens with cutting-edge expertise, the program aims to make Nigeria a prime destination for outsourcing and technology-driven services by 2025.

He also highlighted the strategic deployment of 90,000 kilometers of fiber optic cables nationwide, a transformative project expected to launch mid-2025. This investment in connectivity, funded through government loans and private partnerships, aims to enhance access to high-quality internet services, bridging digital divides and fostering economic integration.

The conference theme, “Scaling AI Adoption in Nigeria: Catalysing Cross-Sectoral Innovation and Fostering Inclusive Growth,” aligns with Nigeria’s broader digital transformation agenda. Dr. Tijani stated, “We are leveraging AI to drive productivity, enhance governance, and create jobs for our youth. These efforts reflect our commitment to building a future-ready digital economy.”

The government’s push for AI and digital governance also includes drafting the Digital Economy Bill and introducing data exchange standards to improve inter-agency collaboration. These reforms aim to redefine Nigeria’s digital ecosystem by prioritizing transparency, efficiency, and inclusivity.

Moreover, AI’s integration into critical sectors such as agriculture, healthcare, and education showcases its transformative potential. For instance, AI-powered solutions are being deployed to enhance agricultural productivity, improve healthcare delivery, and foster innovative educational tools.

As nations worldwide recognize AI’s transformative capabilities, Nigeria’s rise as a leader in this space is noteworthy. By leveraging its unique combination of human capital, natural resources, and burgeoning infrastructure, the country aims to unlock AI’s vast potential for driving innovation.

Dr. Tijani reflected on Nigeria’s strategic positioning: “By 2025, we aim to make Nigeria a global hub for tech talent, ensuring Nigerians are equipped for the evolving digital landscape. With strategic investments in connectivity, talent development, AI, and governance, Nigeria is charting a bold course for its digital future.”

The upcoming InnovateAI Lagos conference is a testament to Nigeria’s determination to lead in AI development and adoption. By addressing pressing challenges such as unemployment and financial inclusion, the event aims to foster sustainable growth and position the country as a global hub for AI innovation. Through collaborative efforts between the government, private sector, and international partners, Nigeria is shaping a digital economy that promises inclusive growth and transformative opportunities for its citizens. As the nation builds on its 2024 achievements, 2025 is set to be a defining year in its journey toward becoming an AI-driven economic powerhouse.
